Cricket stadiums are at the centre of any match between two teams. These huge concrete structures not only host matches but stand witness to many glorious moments that unfold on the ground.

There are perhaps hundreds of cricket stadiums in the world, but only a few are the largest by seating capacity. From India to Australia, cricket fans have been able to watch games from some of these biggest venues.

Here you can read about the top 10 largest cricket stadiums in the world.

    10. Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai

    Brabourne Stadium

Designed on the lines of the Lord’s Cricket Ground, the Brabourne Stadium is a historical venue in India. It is an over 90-year-old facility, with its foundation stone laid back in May 1936.

After a year and a half, the stadium’s construction was completed in December 1937. The Cricket Club of India (CCI) owns the heritage venue, which can accomodate 50,000 spectators.

The Jharkhand State Cricket Association decided to build their own stadium in 2011 and completed the construction two years later. The venue has nine pitches and 76 corporate boxes, providing a top-notch experience.

    8. Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium, Lucknow

    Ekana Cricket Stadium

Another venue with 50,000 spectators, the Ekana Stadium is located in Lucknow. It is one of the modern cricket stadiums in India, as it was thrown open to the public in 2017.

Since then the stadium, named after India’s former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, has hosted many cricket matches. The stadium was one of the venues of the 2023 ODI World Cup played in India.

Situated in Kerala’s Thiruvananthapuram, the Greenfield International Stadium boasts a capacity of over 50,000 fans. Thus far, the venue has hosted some international games played by the Indian cricket team.

    6. Adelaide Oval, Adelaide

Apart from being one of the largest cricket stadiums, the Adelaide Oval is also one of the most stunning venues. Witnessing a live cricket match at the Adelaide Oval is a surreal experience.

The stadium, located in Adelaide, can host 53,000 spectators at once. The Adelaide Oval, opened in 1871, witnesses a record footfall when it hosts day/night Test matches and other prominent cricket ties like World Cup and BBL games.

    5. Perth Stadium, Perth

    Perth Stadium

A relatively newer and modern facility, the Perth Stadium is the second-largest cricket venue in Australia and the fifth-largest in the world. The construction of the stadium started in 2014, and the venue was ready to host games in late 2017.

After its completion, the Perth Stadium replaced the WACA Stadium as the main venue for all cricketing action. The cutting-edge venue boasts a seating capacity of over 61,000 spectators.

The stadium, opened in 2008, has some of the biggest boundaries among the Indian venues. Even though the stadium was opened in 2008, the facility had to wait till 2023 to host its first international game.

    3. Eden Gardens, Kolkata

    Eden Gardens

Kolkata’s iconic Eden Gardens is the third-largest cricket stadium across the world. The venue is the oldest in India, having first been opened in 1864.

It is a prominent cricketing venue in India, with a seating capacity of 68,000 fans. In the past, the stadium has also hosted crowds of over 1 lakh for some international cricket fixtures.

For the longest time, the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) served as the largest cricket stadium until 2020. First opened back in 1853, the MCG has undergone several renovations, increasing its capacity with time.

Also known as The ‘G, the venue has hosted many memorable encounters, including the Boxing Day Test matches. The stadium has a capacity of over 1 lakh spectators, and whenever a game takes place here, the stadium is always full.

The MCG is on the checklist of many cricket fans, which provides some surreal experiences.

    1. Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad

    Narendra Modi Stadium

The Narendra Modi Stadium is by far the largest cricket stadium in the world. You can see almost 1,32,000 spectators sitting in the stadium at a time during a cricket match.

The stadium situated in Ahmedabad left behind the MCG to occupy the top spot and became only the second venue with over 1 lakh seating capacity.

Before claiming the top spot, the venue, then known as Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Stadium, had a capacity of about 50,000 people. But the stadium underwent reconstruction to emerge as the biggest cricketing venue.

Now, it’s a state-of-the-art venue, boasting all modern facilities, including four dressing rooms, LED floodlights, and 11 pitches. The Narendra Modi Stadium has hosted many high-profile games since its inauguration in 2020, including IPL and ODI World Cup finals.
