Though Bangladesh has not been the strongest team in the head-to-head competition with West Indies in ODI format, the quality of the Bengal Tigers’ bowlers was up to the mark in these matches.
The West Indian team will be visiting Bangladesh for a one-day series and the squad looks pretty exciting with some familiar names in the bowling and all-rounder categories having a past with the Red Giants.
From the captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz through the obscured bowlers, there is a complete list of the Bangladeshi bowlers who have taken the most wickets against the West Indies in ODIs.
5. Abdur Razzak (19 wickets)
Abdur Razzak, one of the lesser-known cricketer names from Bangladesh, had been a shining light of spin bowling against the West Indies in ODIs. Notwithstanding the fact that the country is swamped with left-arm spinners, Razzak was possibly the best amongst them. Razzak’s wicket tally in 15 matches against West Indies was 19 with an economy rate of 4.90.
His best performance against the West Indies is registered as 4/39, where he sent East Indian batting back in 2009 to defend a target of 247. The match was won by Bangladesh with a margin of 52 runs and Razzak received the Man of the Match award for his commendable bowling.
4. Shakib Al Hasan (24 wickets)
Shakib Al Hasan, former captain, and perhaps the best all-rounder the country has ever produced, is fourth on the list. He has appeared in 21 matches and bagged 24 wickets with an economy of 3.76 runs. There was not a very visible decline in his performance when he was at his peak when he was the magical spinner with the left arm coupled with aggressive batting.
Shakib’s best performance against the West Indies with the ball came at Mirpur back in 2021, where he managed to deliver with his career best figures of 4/8 against the Jason Mohammed-led side. Shakib took out the top and middle order of the opposing side to leave them at just 122 runs.
3. Mehidy Hasan Miraz (27 wickets)
The present-day captain of Bangladesh, Mehidy Hasan Miraz will be the main player of the ODI series against the West Indies starting on October 18, and he will come to the competition more than ever. Miraz is in third position with 27 wickets taken from 19 matches at a 4.34 economy rate. He also achieved 10 maiden overs while having an economy rate of 4.34 against the West Indies.
His highest against the West Indies is 4/25, which he achieved in 2021 at Mirpur. Miraz was on the team of captain Tamim Iqbal, who gave him the opportunity to take four out of his 9.4 overs and finish the West Indies for just 148 runs. He was named the Player of the Match as Bangladesh celebrated a comfortable 7-wicket win.
2. Mustafizur Rahman (28 wickets)
Better known as Fizz, Mustafizur Rahman has been the lion-hearted man of the Bangladesh speedster department for quite a while now. On top of that, he was also the most consistent bowler during the West Indies series in ODIs. His wicket tally against the Windies reads 28 from only 16 matches with an economy rate of 4.88.
He last faced the West Indies in 2022, but on the whole, his best days against the team are definitely behind him. In 2019, during a tri-series match, Mustafizur ran riot against the Caribbeans, taking 4 wickets for just a mere 43 runs. The Holder-led team was put to a total of 247 runs which was Bangladesh’s winning score with 5 wickets to spare.
1. Mashrafe Mortaza (30 wickets)
The Bangladeshi pacer, Mashrafe Mortaza, was undoubtedly the main destroyer of the West Indies with his 30 wickets in 19 matches. Despite being only 42 years old, he had already established a reputation as a fighter who would always come back stronger. Mortaza’s last match versus the West Indies was in 2019, and he ended his career against them with an impressive economy of 4.64.
His best performance against Bangladesh came in 2018 during a tri-series when he took 4 wickets. Mortaza was very economical, giving just 43 runs in his 9 overs and thus taking the top and middle order of the Caribbean side by storm.
