Right now Pakistan’s cricket team is in a bit of a mess. Fans aren’t seeing the kind of cricket they want to see from the team. There has been a lot of chopping and changing in the lineup and now Salman Ali Agha is the captain for the T20s.
Since he took over the team selectors have made some big calls, like dropping Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan from the T20 squad. The idea is to play more attacking cricket and a lot of young players are getting a chance to step up under Agha’s leadership.
Before Agha, Rizwan was captain for 4 games. But it was Babar Azam who was captain for a long time, from 2019 to the T20 World Cup in 2024. After the World Cup didn’t go well he was out of the captaincy. People used to say the team played too safe when he was in charge.
Salman Ali Agha Captaincy Record:
| Matches Played | Matches Won | Matches Lost | Tie/No Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| 23 | 13 | 10 | 0 |
Since Agha became captain there has been a lot of talk whether he is the right man for the job. He has led the team in 23 games and so far the results have been mixed. They have won 23 and lost 10. His tenure started with a loss to Australia but then they won against Zimbabwe. After that they lost a series to New Zealand but swept Bangladesh at home.
But Bangladesh got their revenge on their home turf and won the series 2-1. Recently they won against the West Indies 2-1. It’s clear the team isn’t playing at a consistent level under Agha.
When they were in New Zealand Agha’s team won only one out of five games. So if you look at the numbers and who they were playing against it looks like Babar Azam had better results than Agha.
But Agha is currently leading a very new team with not much experience. As the players get more time in the field, things might start to turn around for Pakistan.
