In the last series of the 2023-25 World Test Championship cycle, Australia will play against Sri Lanka. This short two-Test series will commence on January 29 and will be played at the Galle International Cricket Stadium. Australia has sealed their way to the WTC final with a win in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in their home country, while Sri Lanka has already been eliminated from the contention.
Australian captain Pat Cummins is not expected to play in the Test series as he has taken paternity leave after the birth of his second child. In his absence, Smith will captain the pair of Tests for the visitors. There are expected to be changes in the Australian attack.
Apart from Cummins, Josh Hazlewood rejoined his team on an undisclosed date on Sri Lanka tour duties. One of Starc’s bolters is Sean Abbott. Spinners will get a good bite of action at Galle, and might see Matt Kuhnemann in the playing XI with Nathan Lyon.
Some of Sri Lanka’s players are battling injuries. While batter Kamindu Mendis is currently unavailable, skipper Dhananjaya De Silva has worked his way back after overcoming an injury. Sri Lanka has also called up two uncapped players, batter Lahiru Udara and spinner Sonal Dinusha, into the home series.
Sri Lanka will follow it with a two-match ODI series at home against Australia. This series of 50-over matches will allow both teams to prepare for the all-critical Champions Trophy, which is just around the corner. The ODIs will be played in Colombo.
