He’s not interested in replacing Brendon McCullum as England head coach.
Flintoff has been coaching the Lions and the Northern Superchargers in The Hundred. He was recovering from a car crash while filming for BBC’s Top Gear which left him injured.
His work with the Lions has led to speculation he might take the top job if McCullum doesn’t extend his contract. McCullum’s contract runs until the 2027 World Cup and covers all formats.
Flintoff has dismissed the idea, praising McCullum and comparing him to Gareth Southgate’s work with the England football team from 2016 to 2024.
On the Stick to Cricket podcast, Flintoff said: It’s not something I’m considering. Baz McCullum is amazing – the best England coach. He’s fantastic and the culture he’s created is great. It’s like what Gareth Southgate did with the football team. They’re not just good players but great guys.
I enjoy working with Keysy (England managing director of men’s cricket Rob Key). He’s one of my best mates and has helped me a lot. I also have a great relationship and respect for Baz.
What’s Next for Flintoff With England Lions?
Flintoff joined England’s white-ball head coach Matthew Mott’s staff in September 2023 but didn’t go to that year’s World Cup in India. He was with the team at the previous year’s T20 World Cup.
In his first season with the Superchargers, Flintoff’s leadership almost got the team to the knockout stage which was a change from their last place finish the previous year. He managed the Lions on a tour of Australia last winter and recently oversaw two unofficial Test matches against India A.

Right now I feel I’m in the right place working with the Lions. I don’t see this as a path to anything else. I’m committed to this and get to work with these guys, said Flintoff.
I’m not thinking about franchises or anything else. Although I do the Northern Superchargers which came around last year and I enjoy working with (Superchargers captain) Harry Brook on that.
I feel like I’ve got a job to do here and I’m not thinking about what’s next?
