BCB has addressed the complaints about the ODI captaincy change. On a TV program recently, Nazmul Abedin, the board’s cricket operation head, said Najmul Hossain Shanto wasn’t removed; his tenure as captain ended after the 2025 Champions Trophy.
Many fans and cricket experts were shocked when Mehidy Hasan Miraz was announced as the new ODI captain before the Sri Lanka tour. People started complaining because Shanto wasn’t given an extension and there was no prior announcement made about it. Some think Shanto was upset and even quit as Test captain because of how everything was handled.
But Nazmul Abedin of the BCB clarified things on a Jamuna TV show on July 19. He said after the Champions Trophy there was no active ODI captain so the board decided to name a new one.
Abedin said, After the Champions Trophy we didn’t have an ODI captain. It’s not true that Shanto was removed from being captain. There was no captain at all. Shanto probably thought he would lead in the next series since he was the captain before. It’s okay for him to think that. But the board probably had other plans. Yes, the board could have picked Shanto again but that would have needed a separate announcement.
He said Shanto’s time was up but admitted the board could have spoken to the old captain about the change better.
Abedin added, Since we didn’t have a captain at the time there was no need to talk with Shanto. A choice was made in a meeting and Shanto was told about it because he used to be the captain. Yes, we could have talked to him but it’s not true that he was removed from the job. The decision about captaincy was made in a meeting and I was responsible to tell both Shanto and Mehidy Hasan Miraz. Nothing else was involved. That’s why I told Shanto first.

BCB wants to move forward with Miraz as the new ODI captain. While some may still wonder about the timing and how the decision was shared, the board says they didn’t mean to disrespect Shanto.Shanto has been dropped from the T20I team. He didn’t play in the Sri Lanka series and is not playing in the current Pakistan series. Shanto recently quit as Test captain and has been having issues with his game and has played only one T20I since then. It seems Bangladesh is moving on without him.
