Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar was celebrated at a special event at the BCCI office in Mumbai, where a new boardroom named 10000 Gavaskar was officially opened. This room honors his incredible achievement of being the first player to score 10,000 runs in Test cricket. The ceremony was attended by BCCI president Roger Binny, vice president Rajeev Shukla, and secretary Devajit Saikia, all recognizing Gavaskar’s huge impact on Indian cricket.
The BCCI shared the moment on social media, posting a video of Gavaskar signing an old photo from his playing days, which brought back memories of his legendary career. During the event, Gavaskar expressed his genuine thanks for the honor. He remarked, MCA is my mother and BCCI is my father. I really appreciate the opportunity I’ve had in Indian cricket. This is a huge honor, and I’m thankful to BCCI. Anytime they need me, I’m here.
Gavaskar played for India from 1971 to 1987 and is considered one of the finest batters ever. He was known for his calmness and solid technique, often facing the toughest fast bowlers of the time without a helmet. His bravery and focus made him a symbol of strength in Indian cricket. He made history by being the first player to hit 10,000 Test runs during a match against Pakistan in 1987. Today, he ranks as the third highest run-scorer for India in Tests, with 10,122 runs, trailing only Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid. His 34 Test centuries set a world record for almost twenty years until Tendulkar broke it in 2005.
