The surprise recall of veteran pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar for India’s upcoming assignment in New Zealand has sparked plenty of discussion among fans and experts alike, with many wondering what tipped the scales in his favour after a prolonged absence from the national setup. Cricket analyst Kotak believes the answer lies in the Uttar Pradesh seamer’s recent body of work in the Indian Premier League.
“Bhuvneshwar has been doing really well in the IPL for the last two seasons, so the selectors must have thought that he would be useful in New Zealand,” Kotak explained, pointing to the bowler’s consistency with the new ball and his ability to control the game in the middle overs as key factors that likely influenced the selection panel’s thinking.
Swing Conditions Could Favour the Veteran
New Zealand’s pitches have traditionally offered assistance to bowlers capable of moving the ball through the air, and Bhuvneshwar’s reputation as one of India’s finest exponents of swing bowling makes him a logical fit for the conditions. His experience on previous tours of the country, combined with his knack for picking up early wickets, could prove invaluable for a bowling attack looking to make early inroads against the Kiwi top order. CricketBuzz understands that the team management has expressed confidence in his ability to adapt quickly, given his vast international experience spanning multiple formats.
While younger pacers have been knocking on the selection door, the management’s decision to back experience over exuberance reflects a calculated gamble that could pay rich dividends if conditions align in Bhuvneshwar’s favour. As CricketBuzz reported earlier, the broader squad composition for the series also suggests a balanced approach, blending seasoned campaigners with emerging talent. Whether this recall translates into match-winning performances remains to be seen, but for now, the selectors appear to be backing form and proven skill over age.
