Former Australian all-rounder Dan Christian has made a surprising return to professional cricket after a two-year retirement break. At 41, Christian was drafted back into the Sydney Thunder squad in the ongoing Big Bash League (BBL) to fill the void left by a string of injuries to key players, including Cameron Bancroft, Daniel Sams, Jason Sangha, and Nic Maddinson.
Christian, who last played for the Sydney Sixers in the 2022/23 season, showed he still has what it takes by contributing with both bat and ball in his comeback game.
Why Did Christian Return?
The Sydney Thunder were hit hard by injuries, with several players being ruled out of the tournament. A recent on-field collision between Cameron Bancroft and Daniel Sams further worsened the team’s situation, leading to their assistant coach Dan Christian stepping back onto the field.
Player | Injury | Status |
---|---|---|
Cameron Bancroft | Fractured shoulder, broken nose | Out for the season |
Daniel Sams | Concussion | Under protocol |
Jason Sangha | Wrist injury | Out for the season |
Nic Maddinson | Knee injury | Out for the season |
Performance in the Comeback Match
In his first game back, Christian faced Brisbane Heat at the Gabba on January 6. Batting at No. 8, he scored an unbeaten 23 runs off 15 balls, including two massive sixes. His six off Xavier Bartlett was measured at an impressive 92 meters.
With the ball, Christian was the most economical bowler for Sydney Thunder, picking up 1 wicket for 25 runs in 4 overs. He dismissed Nathan McSweeney and helped keep the Thunder in the game despite their eventual five-wicket loss.

Christian’s Views on His Return
Speaking about his decision to come out of retirement, Christian said:
“I made the decision during the off-season that a return to the BBL or any other T20 leagues was never entirely off the table for me. The body feels great, and I wanted to ensure I was prepared if an opportunity arose. The incident with Cam Bancroft and Dan Sams was extremely unfortunate, but I’m really grateful for the opportunity it’s presented.”
Sydney Thunder’s Upcoming Challenges
With injuries continuing to plague the Thunder, the team is also likely to lose key players Sherfane Rutherford and Lockie Ferguson later in the season due to ILT20 commitments. The management expressed confidence in Christian’s ability to contribute both on and off the field.
Thunder General Manager Trent Copeland said:
“We’re very fortunate to have Dan already within the club. He’s a legend of the BBL, and we’ve got no doubt he’s still up to the level. We can’t wait to see him jump back into this environment and make an impact.”
Dan Christian’s return has added much-needed depth and experience to Sydney Thunder’s lineup. His impressive comeback performance shows that age is just a number for the T20 legend. Fans eagerly await to see if Christian can guide the injury-hit Thunder to a successful campaign in BBL 2024.
