Dinesh Karthik had a conversation with Virat Kohli recently and it reminded him of Shubman Gill.
Karthik said Kohli told him people see him as a Test legend. Kohli said being the captain of the team gave him even more satisfaction. Karthik heard the same from Gill who wants to lead the team since he became captain.
Kohli stepped down from Test cricket in May this year after resigning from captaincy in January 2023 and Rohit Sharma took over in all formats. Sharma retired just before Gill’s captaincy. Shubman Gill started his captaincy in the current Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy in England. The series is tied 1-1 after two Tests.
Speaking on a Sky Sports podcast, Karthik said, You brought up Virat Kohli. I spoke to him recently and the topic of captaincy came up. He said, People may think I’m a great Test player and I did enjoy batting in Tests. But honestly becoming captain was the best thing in my life. The funny thing is Gill said the same thing.
Karthik also mentioned a chat with Gill, He said, I used to bat differently but now that I’m captain I think about what the team needs instead of thinking about my own batting. I was amazed. This is something the cricket world should pay attention to. Here’s a guy with talent, skill and technique and now he has the mindset to lead from the front as captain.

Gill has shown that kind of leadership in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. He is currently the top scorer after two Tests with 585 runs at 146.25 with two centuries and a double century. In the second Test at Edgbaston he was the first player to reach 200 and 150 in the same Test and that led to a huge 336 run win for India.
