As cricket is one of the most popular sports in England, it is no wonder that the country possesses some of the oldest cricket grounds. In 2023, England had 11 stadiums where international cricket matches were played. There were also 12 cricket grounds that had international games held in the past.
In England and Wales, 18 professional counties correspond to 36 cricket grounds at least because each county has at least 2 grounds. If we add the huge number of club and community cricket grounds, the overall figure will be massive.
The following are the five best cricket stadiums in England.
1. Lord’s

Lord’s is often called the ‘home of cricket’ in England. It is the most popular cricket ground in the country, and it is also the place where all touring teams wish to visit.
The original ground whose name is associated with its founder Thomas Lord opened in 1774 before moving to its present site in 1814. It was at Lord’s that the first test match in England happened in 1884, and today it has the most tests played in the country. It now hosts Tests, ODIs, T20Is, and all domestic formats including The Hundred.
A lot of memorable cricket incidents have taken place at Lord’s, but perhaps the most famous was in 1984 when England set a huge target and the West Indies who were visiting scored 344-1 in the fourth innings and thus won the match.

2. Trent Bridge

Trent Bridge is yet another place with a long history as one of England’s most important test grounds, and it is very near Nottingham. It is known as a fast-scoring field in limited-overs cricket and has the highest team scores. England made a monumental score of 481/6 against Australia in 2018 and 444/3 against Pakistan two years earlier.
The building of the bridge began in 1841, and the first match was in 1899. The stadium currently accommodates Testing, ODIs, T20s, and domestic cricket of all types. Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club calls Trent Bridge its home ground too.
3. The Oval

The Oval, situated in London, gained its notoriety as the venue for the first international test match in England. The year was 1880 when the English team played Australia.
The Oval is an arena where matches take place regularly and it was the site of more than 100 test matches. The stadium also hosts One Day Internationals and Twenty20 matches along with county games for Surrey and Hundred matches for the Oval Invincibles.
In 2007, Surrey achieved the world record for the highest List A score of 496/4 against Gloucestershire at their home ground, the Oval Stadium.
4. Edgbaston

The Edgbaston Stadium, located in Birmingham, was established in 1882 and held its first test match 20 years later. Like the other luxury venues, Edgbaston also accommodates international matches in limited formats as well as domestic competitions.
The Warwickshire team and the Birmingham Phoenix franchise both use this place as their regular home ground. Edgbaston is known as a stadium with a lively atmosphere and a very engaging and sometimes unruly audience.
Among the best matches, the 1981 Ashes Test at Edgbaston is remarkable. England was almost going to lose when the great Ian Botham displayed his magic with a spectacular bowling figure of 5/11 and thus, the team snatched a miraculous victory.
