Gary Stead is back with New Zealand Cricket (NZC) as announced today. He will be a high-performance coach. NZC says Stead will work with players and coaches to grow and work with high-performance programs.
Stead’s return comes after he left his role as head coach of the New Zealand men’s team in June, after a successful period from 2018 to 2025. During that time he coached the team to three major finals – the 2019 ODI World Cup, the 2021 T20 World Cup and the 2025 Champions Trophy. He also guided New Zealand to win the first World Test Championship final (2019-2021) against India.
Stead said: New Zealand cricket has been a big part of my life for the last 30 years. So being able to keep contributing to the sport I love is really important to me.

He added: I still love coaching and helping people learn and get better. If I can share some of what I know and what I’ve been through with the wider cricket community and if that helps the BlackCaps and White Ferns succeed internationally, that would be great.
The role is part-time so Stead can pursue other opportunities outside NZC. This doesn’t prevent him from coaching the Andhra team for the 2025-26 Ranji Trophy season.
I also get to work outside of NZC to add to my skills and experiences. Hopefully I can bring what I learn back to our cricket setup, he said. He’s looking forward to the opportunities ahead and hopes to bring it all back to NZC.
With a lifetime of experience in New Zealand cricket and a passion for developing talent, Stead’s return will be a big plus for the sport in this country. His experience and knowledge will be invaluable as New Zealand tries to stay competitive on the world stage. Fans and players can look forward to the positive impact of Stead’s new role. With domestic and international experience under his belt, Stead has got new ideas to bring.
