India is all set to face England in a 5 match Test series starting from June 20. This is the start of a new World Test Championship cycle for Team India. With seniors like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravichandran Ashwin stepping away from Test cricket, it’s time for the next gen to take charge and show what they have.
One player to watch is opener Yashasvi Jaiswal. He will be opening the innings along with KL Rahul. Jaiswal’s recent performance in the unofficial Test matches against England Lions wasn’t ideal. He scored 24, 64, 17 and 5 in 4 innings—some good moments but not enough consistency. His rivals for the opening spot Abhimanyu Easwaran and KL Rahul had strong outings. Easwaran scored fifties in both his matches while Rahul scored a hundred and a fifty in his only match.
According to Revsportz, Jaiswal had a intense discussion with head coach Gautam Gambhir during practice. It seems Jaiswal was being a bit too aggressive in the nets and getting dismissed, which prompted Gambhir to step in and have a chat with him. After their talk Jaiswal returned to the nets with a sharper focus and played more carefully and avoided unnecessary risks.
Despite his recent struggles Jaiswal has made a good start to his Test career. Since his debut in 2023 he has scored 1798 runs in 19 matches at an average of 52.88 with 4 centuries and 10 fifties. His best performances were against England at home where he scored 712 runs in 9 innings with 2 centuries and 3 fifties.
