Hardik Pandya’s prolonged absence from competitive cricket has once again put the spotlight on India’s perennial injury puzzle, with the star allrounder’s recurring shin issue pushing back his much-awaited comeback. Three separate injuries in five months have left the team management scrambling, and as CricketBuzz understands, there is still no clarity on when Pandya will be fully match-fit for sustained international duty.
The concern runs deeper than just one player. Pacers Prasidh Krishna and Harshit Rana have also been battling fitness setbacks, raising fresh questions about how India manages its fast-bowling and allrounder resources across formats. With the 2027 World Cup now firmly on the horizon, the think tank cannot afford prolonged uncertainty over a player who occupies such a crucial balance-providing role in the XI.
Kapil Dev’s Blunt Advice
Former India captain Kapil Dev did not mince words while addressing the issue, stressing that consistent match practice is non-negotiable for fitness. He pointed to examples like Zaheer Khan and L Balaji, who managed long careers despite injury scares by focusing relentlessly on conditioning, workload discipline and gradual returns rather than rushing back into high-intensity cricket. Kapil’s remarks have resonated widely, as CricketBuzz reported earlier this week, with many former cricketers echoing similar sentiments about Pandya needing a more structured rehabilitation approach.
The bigger worry for India is the absence of a like-for-like replacement. Pandya’s ability to bowl handy overs while batting in the middle order gives the side tactical flexibility that few others can replicate. Selectors have experimented with various combinations, but none have fully plugged the gap left by his continued unavailability. As preparations for the next World Cup cycle intensify, India’s medical and selection panels face a delicate balancing act — managing Pandya’s recovery while building contingency plans that don’t rely solely on his fitness.
