On Monday, July 21, Harry Brook put an end to the comparisons, saying Joe Root is the best Test batsman ever. Brook, who has recently taken Root’s spot as the number one Test batsman in the ICC rankings, said he’s not in the same league as Root. He’d rather Root be number one.
Over the last few years Root has been the best English batsman. Since 2023 he’s made over 2500 runs, more than Alastair Cook’s 12472 Test runs. He’s now 120 runs from passing Rahul Dravid, Jacques Kallis and Ricky Ponting to be the second highest run scorer in the format, with only Sachin Tendulkar ahead of him.
Everyone wants to be number one, right? Brook said at a press conference about the rankings and comparisons. “He wants it more than anyone. He’s a great player. I’m not as good as him, so I’ll let him have it. He’s played 12-13 years. In my opinion he’s the best Test batsman ever, so he can be number one for now.
Brook and Root have been England’s best batsmen in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, and they’ve taken a 2-1 lead. But their biggest is the fourth Test on a Manchester surface which will help the bowlers.
Brook on Dawson: ‘He’s a wily old fox’
