Kris Srikkanth, the former Indian team selector, didn’t mince words recently. He said India’s chances of winning the T20 World Cup next year are zero. India and Sri Lanka are co-hosting the tournament in 2026.
Srikkanth’s comments came after the announcement of the India squad for the Asia Cup 2025 on August 19 at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai. He wasn’t impressed with the selection. Maybe this team can win the Asia Cup but not the T20 World Cup. Are they seriously planning to take this team to the World Cup? Is this how they’re preparing for the T20 World Cup which is just six months away? Srikkanth asked in a video he posted on his YouTube channel.

The 65-year-old was not happy that Axar Patel was dropped as vice-captain without any reason. He also felt that the selection process didn’t follow any rules. They’ve gone in the wrong direction. Axar Patel is no more the vice-captain. I don’t know how Rinku Singh, Shivam Dube and Harshit Rana got in. They considered performances from before the IPL even though the IPL is supposed to be the main thing they look at, he said.
In short, the former opening batsman asked why Shivam Dube was included and Yashasvi Jaiswal was left out. Who will bat at number 5? Sanju Samson, Jitesh Sharma, Shivam Dube or Rinku Singh since Hardik Pandya bats there.
He added that Axar can’t bat at six. I don’t get why they picked Dube. Yashasvi Jaiswal has done well in international cricket and the IPL. What more does he need to do? Srikkanth asked.
Along with the 15-member squad, India has also named five standby players. These are Jaiswal, Prasidh Krishna, Washington Sundar, Riyan Parag and Dhruv Jurel. India is in Group A of the Asia Cup along with Pakistan, Oman and the United Arab Emirates.
