June 20, 2025, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill made history as they both scored centuries on the first day of the India-England Test at Headingley, Leeds. They joined an elite group of Indian batsmen who have scored centuries on the first day of a Test series abroad.
With Gill as the new captain, India started this Test series on a high. After losing the toss and being put into bat, Jaiswal and KL Rahul added 91 runs for the opening wicket. Jaiswal, despite getting hit and cramping, scored 101 off 159 balls before Ben Stokes got him out.

Things only got better for India when Gill walked in at number 4. On his captaincy debut, he made a big statement, scoring a century off 140 balls and was unbeaten on 127 when play was called off.
Jaiswal and Gill also became the third Indian pair to score centuries on the first day of an overseas Test tour. The only other times this has happened were in 2001 when Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag got tons against South Africa and in 2017 when Shikhar Dhawan and Cheteshwar Pujara both scored centuries in Sri Lanka.
