After India’s loss to England in the first Test at Headingley, there’s a debate about Jasprit Bumrah playing in the next game at Birmingham. Before the series, it was decided that Bumrah would only play three of the five matches due to his back.
India lost the first game by 5 wickets despite scoring over 800 runs and Bumrah taking 5 wickets in the first innings. If India struggled with Bumrah, his absence would be a big problem.
After a week’s break, Bumrah should be ready depending on his back. He’s been practicing and both captain Shubman Gill and assistant coach Ryan Ten Doeschate say he’s available but the final decision will be taken on game day.
If Bumrah can’t play Irfan Pathan suggested Akash Deep as a replacement. Pathan said Akash is like Shami, has a straight seam and surprise zip.
Besides Akash Deep, options are Prasidh Krishna, Mohammed Siraj and Arshdeep Singh a left arm seamer yet to debut in this format. Pathan also mentioned the value of a left arm bowler like Arshdeep, the angle he creates and his control.

About Shubman Gill’s captaincy, Pathan asked for patience after the first Test loss. He said Gill is new to the role and lacks the experience of senior players and this is his first time leading in England. Pathan said Gill scored a century, that should boost his confidence. Once he is settled with his own form, he will become more bold in his decisions.
