In England’s convincing victory over West Indies in the first T20I at Riverside Ground on Wednesday, Jos Buttler was at the peak of his powers. From number three, he belted out 96 off 59 deliveries to set a challenging target of 188 runs for his team.
After winning the toss and opting to bat first, England started unhappily, losing their opener Ben Duckett for a solitary run. Buttler steadied the ship with a 79-run stand alongside wicket-keeper-batsman Jamie Smith. Smith departed for 38, and with the fall of Harry Brook for six, Buttler rampaged against the West Indian bowlers to reach his half-century. But, Jos was dismissed for 96 attempting to bring up his hundred by Alzarri Joseph. That innings saw Buttler cross Virat Kohli to become the highest run-scorer against West Indies in T20Is.
The list of highest run-scorers against West Indies in T20Is stands as:
– Rohit Sharma – 693
– David Warner – 662
– Phil Salt – 640
– Jos Buttler – 611
– Virat Kohli – 570
This was Buttler’s fifth T20I fifty against West Indies, leaving him tied with Rohit Sharma and Babar Azam for the most fifties against them in this format.
