KSCA secretary A Shankar and treasurer E Jairam resigned on Friday night after the tragic stampede in Bengaluru that killed 11 and injured many during the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) victory celebrations at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium for their first IPL title. In a statement on Saturday, they said they were taking moral responsibility for what happened, despite their limited role in the event. Several political leaders and police officers have already been suspended due to the incident. An FIR has been filed at the Cubbon Park Police Station against RCB, KSCA president Raghuram Bhat and the event management company.
In their statement, they said, We are resigning as Secretary and Treasurer of the Karnataka State Cricket Association due to the unforeseen and unfortunate events of the last two days and though our role was very limited. Their resignations came after a report showed that KSCA had sought permission for RCB’s IPL trophy celebrations at Vidhan Soudha and claimed they had helped get the necessary approvals for the event which is now under the scanner. They said the event management company would handle the arrangements.

After the FIR was filed against Bhat, Shankar and Jairam moved the Karnataka High Court saying crowd and gate management was not their responsibility. While the event at Vidhan Soudha went off smoothly, chaos broke out outside the Chinnaswamy Stadium where crowds gathered after RCB announced free entry through social media—only to later withdraw the offer. Though the victory parade was cancelled, the stadium event went on and that’s what drew criticism. The High Court has stayed police from taking any action against KSCA officials till next hearing which is on June 16.
