Shubman Gill had reporters chuckling during a recent press interaction when he was unexpectedly pulled into questions about India’s T20I planning ahead of the series against West Indies. Without missing a beat, the India captain shot back with a simple yet pointed reminder: “Mai toh hu hi nahi” — loosely translated as “I’m not even part of that team.”
The moment, light-hearted as it was, highlighted a fact that often gets lost amid the constant chatter around Indian cricket’s leadership — Gill currently captains the Test and ODI sides, but has no role in the shortest format at the moment. CricketBuzz understands that selectors have kept the T20I captaincy separate as part of a broader plan to manage workloads and groom leadership across formats.
Gill’s Focus Remains On Red and White-Ball Cricket
Rather than getting drawn into speculation about T20I combinations or strategy against the Caribbean side, Gill redirected attention to his actual responsibilities — steering India’s Test and ODI campaigns. Having taken over the reins in both formats, his priority remains building a settled core group, nurturing young talent, and maintaining consistency in results, especially with a packed international calendar ahead.
The exchange, though brief, offered a glimpse of Gill’s easy humour under the media spotlight, a trait that has quietly won him goodwill among journalists covering the team. As CricketBuzz reported earlier, the team management continues to evaluate options for the T20I leadership separately, keeping Gill’s workload focused on the longer formats.
