South African fast bowler Marco Jansen shared a little story of a message that came from Punjab Kings head coach Ricky Ponting just prior to the departure for the World Test Championship final at Lord’s against Australia. Jansen has had a strong IPL season with 16 wickets from 14 matches as Punjab Kings made it to the final.
The man also wished him the best but joked that he hoped that Jansen would lose. “Before I left India, he just said ‘good luck, I hope you do well, but I hope you lose,’” Jansen shared in an interview.

Jansen spoke very highly of Ponting, and the former Australian captain further elevated Jansen’s confidence. He is very much looking forward to carrying that confidence into the WTC final. “I learned a lot from him, especially mentally. He always has a positive outlook,” he said. According to Jansen, that’s really why Ponting is well-respected in cricket: he concentrates on what could go right.
Before the final, South Africa brought in the famed English bowler Stuart Broad as a consultant. This has Jansen relishing the prospect of picking Broad’s brain for some advice. Broad is very much aware of Australia, particularly at Lord’s, where he has taken 110 wickets.

“I’ll definitely ask him about his strategies against Australia, but, you know, even if you’ve got a plan it doesn’t always work. You’ve just got to figure it out when you’re on the field,” said Jansen. “It’s great to get input, but when the ball gets rolling, you just got to go with it and think your plan’s going to work out.”
