New Zealand has put together a squad of 13 players for the upcoming three-match ODI series against Pakistan, with Tom Latham taking on the role of captain. It’s worth noting that eight players from the squad that played in the Champions Trophy have made the cut, but a few are missing out this time because they are busy with their IPL gigs. On top of that, pacers Matt Henry and Kyle Jamieson won’t be featured in the lineup as they’re focused on recovering from injuries and managing their workloads.
In an exciting turn of events, top-order batter Nick Kelly is getting his first call-up after having an incredible run in the Plunket Shield, where he racked up a stunning 749 runs, including four centuries. Also joining the team is Muhammad Abbas, who moved from Pakistan to New Zealand when he was just a baby. He scored 340 runs in the one-day Ford Trophy and was part of the New Zealand A squad last year when they faced Australia A.
Adi Ashok is making a comeback to the lineup after a bit of a break, and the selectors see this as a great chance to test some new faces and bring back a few familiar ones, especially with the ODI World Cup still two years down the line. Black Caps head selector Sam Wells pointed out, “With some regular ODI players not available right now, we’ve put together a group of promising players who are ready to step up on the international stage.” He added that this series is a perfect chance to let these players, like Adi, step into the international spotlight.
Nick Kelly has really been the standout batsman in domestic cricket over the past few seasons. He plays with a lot of flair and power, and he’s capable of batting anywhere up in the top six. Then there’s Mo, who’s also seen as one of the most exciting young talents. Not only can he bat, but he gives the team a sixth bowling option, which is especially helpful with Rachin (Ravindra) and Glenn (Phillips) out.
Key players like Daryl Mitchell, Mark Chapman, and Will O’Rourke will continue to play vital roles in the side as well. Plus, Nathan Smith is making his way back into the squad for these ODIs.
Here’s the full New Zealand ODI squad for the Pakistan series: Tom Latham (c), Muhammad Abbas, Adi Ashok, Michael Bracewell, Mark Chapman, Jacob Duffy, Mitch Hay, Nick Kelly, Daryl Mitchell, Will O’Rourke, Ben Sears, Nathan Smith, and Will Young.
It looks like a mix of experience and fresh talent, which should make for an interesting series!
