Tilak Varma, a batter for the Mumbai Indians, recently shared his thoughts about being retired out during a match against the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). He was at 25 runs off 23 balls when his team decided to sub him out. At that point, MI needed 24 runs to win in just seven balls. Mitchell Santner came in to replace him, but unfortunately, he didn’t make much of an impact either, ending his innings with 2 runs as the team lost the game by 12 runs.
After that tough match, Varma bounced back impressively. He scored half-centuries in consecutive matches against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Delhi Capitals (DC). In the latest game against DC, he played a crucial role in the team’s success, making 59 runs off 33 balls. Reflecting on the decision to retire him out in the match against LSG, Varma said he took it in stride. He understood that the team’s management made the choice for the greater good of the squad.
He mentioned, “I didn’t think negatively about it. I realized they made the decision for the team’s benefit. It’s all about how you handle those moments, and I chose to take it positively. I just want to feel comfortable with wherever I’m batting. So, I told the coach and the staff, ‘No worries, just put me wherever. I’ll give it my best.’”
Earlier, against RCB, Varma showcased his skills beautifully, scoring 56 runs off 29 balls with four fours and four sixes, keeping MI in the chase for a target of 222 runs. In the end, MI fell just short by 13 runs.
So far this season, Varma has been quite impactful for the Mumbai Indians. As the second-highest run-getter for the team, he has amassed a total of 210 runs in just five innings. He’s maintaining an average of 42 with an impressive strike rate of 143.83. After their recent win against DC, MI has made some upward movement on the points table, sitting in seventh place with two wins out of six matches and a total of four points.
