In a surprise move, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has apparently decided to fund the Pakistan national hockey team. This will enable the team to participate in the upcoming FIH Pro League, a major international field hockey tournament.
Telecom Asia Sport reports that Pakistan got an invite to join the next FIH Pro League season after New Zealand pulled out of the competition last month. Pakistan and India were asked to fill the open slot.
But there was a problem: the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) didn’t have the money. The team needed 700 million Pakistani Rupees (about $2.5 million) to participate. So they asked the Pakistan Sports Board for help and even got Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif involved, according to First Post.
A source said, It’s official. The PCB will handle all the money and organizational parts of this and the PHF won’t be involved. The PCB will pick its own staff and might even bring in event organizers to make it happen.
The PHF has until August 12 to officially accept the FIH invitation and we expect an announcement soon.
Although the PHF is still the official body for hockey in Pakistan, many think the PCB is taking over for this specific international tournament. PHF President Mir Tariq Hussain Bugti and Secretary Rana Mujahid had been trying to get sponsorships to stay in control but the PCB’s deeper pockets seem to have made the difference.
A PCB official also told Telecom Asia Sport, Yes, the PCB will help Pakistan hockey.
This isn’t the first time the PHF has asked the PCB for help. In 2018, the PHF asked the PCB for a loan to send the team to a big tournament in India but the cricket board said no at the time. For those who don’t know, the Men’s FIH Pro League is a big field hockey event around the world. It replaced the old Hockey World League and now serves as a way to qualify for the Hockey World Cup and sometimes the Olympic Games.
The change is not only a financial lifeline for the hockey team but also a strategic move by the PCB to get Pakistan in a world class event. This could be a precedent for future collaborations between different sports bodies in the country and a more united approach to sports development. By stepping in, the PCB is probably trying to save Pakistan’s presence on the international stage and not let the country miss out on a big opportunity to play against top teams.

The PM’s intervention shows how serious the situation is and the government’s recognition of the importance of sports in national identity and morale. It also shows the problems faced by many sports federations in Pakistan, which face funding and resource issues. The PCB can be a model for how richer sports bodies can help those in need so that talent and potential is not wasted due to financial constraints. The temporary takeover by PCB also raises some questions about the long term governance and financial stability of PHF. While the immediate crisis is averted, we may need to look into the structural and administrative issues in PHF that led to this situation.
A sustainable solution would be to strengthen PHF’s capacity to generate its own revenue and manage its affairs efficiently rather than relying on external help. Looking forward, the partnership between PCB and PHF can bring positive changes in the way hockey is managed and promoted in Pakistan. With PCB’s resources and expertise we can improve training facilities, attract sponsorships and increase the profile of the sport among the public.
This can lead to more participation and success for the national team in international events. This is not just financial help; it’s a calculated plan to strengthen sports in Pakistan and show unity among different fields. It can be a step towards sports growth and success globally.
