Punjab Kings are among the most active franchises in the Indian Premier League. They haven’t won the title in 17 seasons, which is why they are desperate to do well in the tournament. As a result, the franchise made a big move for the upcoming 18th edition of the Indian Premier League, which is still 5-6 months away.
The franchise has signed legendary Australian captain and former head coach of the Delhi Capitals, Ricky Ponting, as their head coach ahead of the IPL 2025. This decision took place after three months since DC and Ponting parted ways, which ended a seven-season stint between them. Ponting will replace Trevor Bayliss and will take over the responsibility of the new head coach ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction.

IPL 2025: Punjab Kings appoint Ricky Ponting as new head coach for the 18th season
Ricky Ponting will be the sixth head coach for the franchise in IPL history. As reported by ESPN Cricinfo, the 49-year-old is in talks with the franchise for a multi-year deal. He has immense experience in the IPL, as he has represented Kolkata Knight Riders and Mumbai Indians.
Ponting also led MI before passing on the baton to Rohit Sharma in 2013. After leaving DC, Ponting was on the radar for a few franchises, but it has been clear that he will be part of PBKS for the IPL 2025. The 49-year-old joined DC in 2018, and the franchise made to the playoffs for three seasons (2019, 2020, and 2021) under his coaching.
Meanwhile, PBKS, which hasn’t made the playoffs since 2014, are looking to do everything to end their drought in the tournament. Ponting has a decent record as head coach. After retiring from the IPL, he was with MI as a consultant in 2014, while serving as head coach of the team for the next two seasons in 2015 and 2016. MI won their second title in 2015 under him. Even DC reached their only IPL final in 2020 under him. PBKS will be his third franchise to take responsibility for head coach. The Punjab-based franchise will be making the decisions of other coaching staff. And some reports confirm that after Ricky Ponting joins them, he is likely to help them find the best coach staff.
