The Word on the street is that Ravichandran Ashwin, India’s spin king, is looking to become a player-coach in overseas T20 leagues. This comes after Cricbuzz reported that Ashwin is done with all international cricket and the IPL. Now he’s looking to try something new.
With his vast experience of playing for his country and different franchises, Ashwin seems to want to see what’s out there and try his luck in leagues abroad.
Ashwin confirmed on Wednesday that he’s retiring from the Indian Premier League. It’s the end of a 16-year association with the tournament, just after he said goodbye to international cricket. He posted his decision on social media and now he’s said to be interested in roles in foreign leagues.

SA20 might not be an option for Ashwin this year as the IPL-owned franchises there seem to have already signed their players. But he’s still got his eye on Major League Cricket, The Hundred and ILT20, according to the report. The SA20 auction list is already out and the Season 4 auction is just around the corner on September 9th.
ILT20 could be a good fit for Ashwin this year with five of the six franchises having Indian owners who would probably be happy to have him. Sources say people from all the leagues have already approached Ashwin, including those from the Big Bash League in Australia, after he announced his IPL retirement.
Being a player-coach seems like a perfect fit for Ashwin given his skill and deep understanding of the game. Now that he’s retired, Ashwin has many doors open to him. He could do commentary or his sharp cricket brain would make him a good candidate for administrative positions. In fact some of the unusual ideas about the latest Indian Premier League retention rules are believed to have come from Ashwin’s advice to the BCCI.
Ashwin told Cricbuzz, I really want to enjoy my last couple of years, hopefully without anyone judging me. I want to live life my way.
