Rahul Chahar to play for Surrey in their final match against Hampshire at the Utilita Bowl this week. Surrey are 14 points behind Nottinghamshire and need to win and for Nottinghamshire to get less than 11 points in their last match against Warwickshire at Trent Bridge.
Chahar, 26, signed up for the last part of the County Championship season at the beginning of September. He’s joining the team this week to play against Hampshire. He wasn’t needed for the two home games at the Kia Oval against Warwickshire and Nottinghamshire.
Chahar is a leg-spinner who has played for Rajasthan in the Ranji Trophy. He’s also played for India seven times in limited-overs cricket. In 24 first-class matches, Chahar has taken 87 wickets with an average of 26.12, and his best match record is 9/148.

He started his Indian Premier League (IPL) career with Rising Pune Supergiants, but he really made a name for himself with the Mumbai Indians. He was a key player in the squad that won the IPL in 2019 and 2020. Later, the Punjab Kings bought him in 2022, and he played last season with the Sunrisers Hyderabad.
I’m happy to be playing for Surrey this week. I want to make a difference and help the team win their last game, Chahar said.
He’s been called up to the team because Surrey’s other two spinners, Will Jacks and Cam Steel, are injured. Alec Stewart, the club’s advisor for high performance, said having Rahul on the team gives them one more spin option at the Utilita Bowl. They knew they’d be missing players at the end of the season and had a plan, taking into account the possible field conditions and the team they’re up against. They had planned for Sai Kishore to come back for the final games of the season, but sadly he hurt his finger and needed surgery so he couldn’t play.
