After his batting on Day 2 of the second Test against England at Edgbaston, Indian all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja joked that his chance to be captain is over. He played second fiddle to India’s captain Shubman Gill but still scored 89 off 137 balls to keep India in a strong position.
Jadeja, on his third tour of England in his 15-year career, was asked if he thought about captaincy while batting. Smiling he told reporters after the day’s play, No, that time is gone now.
Jadeja and Gill added 203 runs together to take India to a big score. His innings ended when he tried to pull a short fast ball from Josh Tongue. The extra pace and bounce forced Jadeja to rush his shot and he gloved the ball to wicketkeeper Jamie Smith.
After Jadeja’s dismissal, Gill and Washington Sundar added 144 runs quickly to put pressure on the tired England bowlers. Joe Root got Sundar for 42 off 103 balls and Gill’s long innings ended at 269 as India reached 587.
In response, England struggled under pressure as Akash Deep and Mohammed Siraj took early wickets. They bowled well together to get rid of Ben Duckett (0), Ollie Pope (0) and Zak Crawley (19). Joe Root and Harry Brook worked hard to steady the innings and added an unbroken 52 runs to take England to 77/3 at the end of the day.

Looking ahead to day three, Jadeja said: We aren’t looking too far ahead. We need to take two or three wickets before lunch. If we do that we’ll be in a good position. Anything can happen. Big partnerships have happened in cricket before. We won’t underestimate the game. We played with energy today and hopefully we’ll get a result for India.
