On June 6, Shubman Gill and his Indian teammates flew for England for a 5-match Test series against the hosts. After an interim period where Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli casually stepped away from international cricket, Gill was named the new captain of India last month. Ponting gave his views on Gill’s leadership abilities with respect to the IPL stint with Gujarat Titans.
According to Ponting, the Indian setup has really made a smart choice by appointing Shubman Gill as the Test captain. He furthered the statement by saying that his IPL captaincy demonstrates that he’s a natural leader. He also stated that Gill is the type of player who will score a lot of runs in Test cricket.
Talking on ICC Review, Ponting said, “I think it’s the right move. Looking back at how he’s handled the Gujarat Titans, leadership really seems to fit him well. If you’re a captain and a batter, you need to be scoring runs, and Shubman is doing just that in the IPL. The timing feels right, and I believe he’ll be a good captain who will score a lot in Tests.”
