Rishabh Pant’s tour of England started well, but it might end with him hurt. He had two centuries in the first series game in Leeds and celebrated the first one in his own way. Now, the Indian wicketkeeper-batter got hit on the right foot on the first day of the Manchester Test against England.
How did this happen? Pant, at 37, tried a reverse-sweep on the fourth ball of the 68th over of India’s innings. Chris Woakes, a right-arm pacer, bowled the ball. It hit the inside edge and Pant’s right boot. Woakes’ team appealed for an LBW, but it was turned down. Pant took off his gloves and started to limp.
England reviewed, but the replay showed the inside edge, so they lost the review. The Indian team physio came to the field. Pant was in a lot of pain and his foot was swollen. He couldn’t put his foot on the ground which was worrying.
The 27-year-old was taken off the field in a buggy, still in pain. He was taken to a medical area at the ground. India Test captain Shubman Gill checked on him. Later, BCCI said he was taken to a hospital for scans.
Will Pant miss the rest of the tour?
An update will follow. Ricky Ponting thinks that the immediate swelling and Pant not being able to put weight on his foot means it could be serious.
Ponting said on Sky Sports that Pant hardly put his foot down and that the swelling worried him. He’s had a metatarsal injury before and he knows they’re small, fragile bones. The fact that Pant couldn’t put weight on it doesn’t look good.
Liam Dawson isn’t sure if Pant will play in the 4th Test again. Dawson said that the injury doesn’t look good and he hopes Pant is okay. He also said that Pant is a very good player but might not play much in the rest of the game.

This isn’t the first time Pant has been hurt on this England tour. In England’s first innings in the third Test at Lord’s, he hurt his finger while catching a ball from Jasprit Bumrah. He couldn’t keep wickets so Dhruv Jurel replaced him. But, Pant did bat in both innings. Not this again.
