Robin Uthappa, a former cricketer for India, recently shared his thoughts on the challenges facing the Chennai Super Kings. He pointed out that finding someone to fill Ruturaj Gaikwad’s shoes is going to be a tough job. Right now, with the team having lost four games in a row, it might take some time for MS Dhoni to turn things around as captain for the upcoming IPL 2025.
On Thursday, the head coach of Chennai, Stephen Fleming, announced that Dhoni would be leading the team for the rest of the season, given that Gaikwad has been sidelined due to an elbow fracture. Fans will get to see Dhoni back in action when Chennai faces off against the reigning champions, the Kolkata Knight Riders, this Friday at Chepauk.
Uthappa expressed his skepticism, saying that just having Dhoni as captain won’t magically change the team’s fortunes. He noted, “There are still plenty of problems within the squad. It’s a tricky situation. How do you replace a steady player like Rutu, who was one of the few batsmen consistently performing?”
He did offer a glimmer of hope, mentioning Devon Conway, who showed some promise in the last match against Punjab by scoring 69 runs before being retired out. Uthappa did acknowledge that Rachin has been a bit inconsistent since the tournament kicked off.
At the moment, Chennai is sitting in ninth place on the points table with just two points from five matches, which isn’t great. With Gaikwad out for the season, Dhoni steps back in as captain, and fans are hopeful that his experience might help turn this rough patch around.
The team really needs to change their approach to start winning games again. Dhoni’s leadership is going to be in the spotlight, especially given the current slump. On the bright side, players like Devon Conway, Rachin Ravindra, and Shivam Dube are coming off some good performances, which could give the team a boost.
As far as the bowling lineup goes, it seems like they’ll stick with what they have. Khaleel Ahmed, Mukesh Choudhary, and Matheesha Pathirana will be in charge of the pace attack, while R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, and Noor Ahmad will be looking to make waves with their spin bowling. All eyes will be on them as the team works to find its footing again.
