Despite a history of heartbreaking losses at the ICC tournaments at the hands of Australia, Rohit Sharma is hopeful of facing Australia in the semis of the Champions Trophy 2025 at Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Tuesday, focused entirely on the Indian team.
India set up a date with the Australians after a resounding 44-run victory over New Zealand on Sunday. It is a replay of the 2023 World Cup final, in which Pat Cummins and Co. denied India the title on home soil, ending their unbeaten run in the competition. Earlier in the same year, they had beaten India in the World Test Championship final at The Oval.
“It will be a good game. Australia have historically done quite well in ICC tournaments; it’s about us and what we will want to do on that particular day,” he said after the match against New Zealand. “It would be a good contest for sure; looking forward to it. Hopefully, we can stitch one towards us.”
Maybe we have found the X-factor to turn around the unfortunate results against Australia: Varun Chakaravarthy. He made his Champions Trophy debut, taking five wickets against New Zealand.
He replaced Harshit Rana for this match, and now India will face a crucial decision of whether to make changes again or stick with Chakaravarthy and just one pacer, Mohammed Shami.
“He has got something different about him, so we wanted to see what he has to offer. We have to sit and think a little about what we do on Thursday; it’s a nice headache to have. If he gets it right, it’s really hard to read him,” Rohit said about Chakaravarthy, while speaking in the presentation ceremony.
He stated that, in a small tournament like Champions Trophy, maintaining the momentum of winning was critical.
“One must win almost every game and get all aspects right in a short tournament. It’s important to correct one’s mistakes quickly; and that is how we know if your team is going up or going down. Finish on a high. We played a perfect game. At that stage, very important to build a partnership after 30 for 3, and I thought we got to a good total,” said he.
