Rohit Sharma, India’s ODI captain, gave an emotional tribute on Instagram following the naming of a stand at Wankhede Stadium in his honor. His parents and wife had come to share in this special moment, especially after his recent stepping away from the Test format.
With moisture in his eyes, Rohit thanked his father and mother and then stepped onto the stage together with them to unveil the stand bearing his name. He reminisced: “It brings some wonderful memories; I used to get the train and come and look at the stadium from afar. This feeling, I can’t really put into words. Seeing this stand means a lot to me” in a video.
It was all the more special to have his whole family there. He thanked them for all of their sacrifices. Standing near his proud wife Ritika, Rohit looked on as his proud parents and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis pulled the lever that unveiled the Rohit Sharma stand.
Apart from Rohit, stand names were also dedicated to former captain Ajit Wadekar and ex-BCCI president Sharad Pawar. For Rohit, it was a childhood dream come true-to be placed along Indian cricketing giants. “Never in my life did I ever think this day would come. Growing up, I wanted to play for Mumbai and India; having my name with the greats is something that I cannot put in words,” said Rohit.
