After a short break, the Indian team is gearing up for the Asia Cup 2025 in the UAE. Their campaign begins on September 10 against the hosts. The squad for the big event has been announced and Sanju Samson is in it. He has been a top performer with the bat in recent T20Is for India.
Even with his good performances, Samson’s opening spot in the playing eleven is not guaranteed. Shubman Gill, who is also the vice-captain, has been included in the squad and that adds competition for the opening slot. There have been talks about Samson being left out of the playing eleven but his mentor Raiphi Gomez doesn’t think that’s going to happen.
Gomez, a former Kerala cricketer, spoke to The Telegraph about Samson’s situation. He says Samson is adaptable enough to bat at any position in the batting order. Gomez also said Samson isn’t bothered about what others are saying as he prepares for the Asia Cup 2025.

As a seasoned international cricketer, Sanju can adjust if he needs to bat lower down the order, Gomez said. His adaptability is one of his strengths and he has a lot of faith in himself.
Gomez added, Sanju hasn’t expressed any worry. So all the talk is just noise from outside and we are not paying attention to it. We are making sure Sanju keeps improving with his batting. He’s focusing on what he needs to do for India.
Sanju Samson didn’t have a great time in the recent T20I series against England, scoring just 51 runs in five matches. He also had a thumb injury during the IPL 2025. But Gomez said Samson used his time at the BCCI Centre of Excellence to recover and is now looking good, as seen in his KCL matches.
What happened in the England T20Is is part of the game; every cricketer goes through ups and downs, Gomez explained. After his IPL injury he spent time at the BCCI Centre of Excellence to get back in shape. Now he seems to be in good form, which you can see from his KCL matches.
