Scott Boland is having a great career. In Jamaica he’s put on another great show. He’s raised the bar for today’s fast bowlers.
The ICC website says Boland’s Test bowling average is now 17.33. That’s the best of any bowler in 110 years of Test cricket. To qualify you have to have bowled 2000 balls. His 3/34 in Australia’s third Test against the West Indies at Sabina Park on Monday got him there.
Syd Barnes of England is the only bowler since 1900 to do better than Boland. The other six bowlers who have done better than Boland are from the 1800s when Test cricket began.
After scoring 225 in the first innings Australia came back strong. Their four pace men bowled out the West Indies for 143 and gave Australia a first innings lead.
Boland ruined the plans of West Indies top scorer John Campbell (36). Campbell left a ball that came back and hit his pads. The fast bowler’s angle and seam into the right hander also got Shai Hope out for 23.
Boland came back to finish off the tail and got Shamar Joseph’s stumps. That gave the tourists an 82 run lead. Late in the Jamaican evening the hosts fought back. When play finished on day two Australia was 6 down and still 200 short of 200.
