Punjab Kings (PBKS) vice-captain Shashank Singh claimed that he felt he indeed deserved to be sung at, or worse, slapped, by his skipper Shreyas Iyer for lazy running between the wickets during the second Qualifier against Mumbai Indians (MI) in IPL 2025. Post match, Shreyas even took Shashank out for dinner for a tete-a-tete.
Shreyas had an unbelievable game, scoring an incredible 87 off 41 balls to chase down a target of 204. Unfortunately, Shashank was run out in the 17th over for just 2 runs due to not focusing, and this added even more pressure on their chase and frustration.
After the match, Shreyas expressed his disappointment with Shashank, and anger started pouring in on social media. “I deserve it. Iyer should have slapped me. My dad didn’t talk to me till the finals,” Shashank said to The Indian Express. He confessed, “I was too casual. It was a critical moment, and I wasn’t giving it my all. Shreyas made it clear he was disappointed, but then he still took me out for dinner.”
PBKS reached the final defeating MI but ended up losing to Rajat Patidar-led Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in Ahmedabad. Shashank hailed Shreyas as the best captain in the game right now.

“From what I’ve witnessed, one cannot be a captain better than him. He gives freedom to all, treats everyone equally, and thereby, no one has even thought in bad terms about him. The young guys really enjoy having him as captain. He is one guy who actually said if we have some suggestions during the game, we can throw them up, and if he finds it to be a good one for him, he shall give it a thought. That rarely happens,” said Shashank.
He would be the second highest run scorer in the season for PBKS, gathering 341 runs at the average strike rate of 153.
