With Rohit Sharma and now Virat Kohli retiring, Team India is looking at a new chapter in Test cricket with a fresh captain. Reports say they might appoint Shubman Gill as the captain before the important England Test tour. He’s expected to meet with Ajit Agarkar and Gautam Gambhir soon to discuss the way forward in Tests.
If Gill does become captain, he could join an unwanted group of Test captains like MS Dhoni and KL Rahul, who have led in SENA countries (South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia) with batting averages below 30. Dhoni averaged 28.37, and Rahul is sitting at 29.60. If Gill takes the role, his average is just 25.70 in those countries.
With Rohit and Kohli stepping down, the management had limited options for captain. They’re looking to the future, and Gill is in a good spot in his career and could lead for the next 5-7 years. His solid performance as an IPL captain also plays a big part in the decision to give him the role in Tests.
