Announced by the Board of Control for Cricket in India on Saturday was the squad for the three-match One-Day International series starting October 19 in Australia.
Gill has been named captain, taking over the ODI setup from Rohit Sharma, while Shreyas Iyer has been named the vice-captain. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who had retired from Tests earlier this year, have also found places in the one-day squad.
The series in Australia will be the first ODI assignment for the Men in Blue after their Champions Trophy win in March this year. The series will be kicked off in Perth followed by matches in Adelaide and Sydney on the 23rd and 25th of October, respectively.
The BCCI has announced the squad given that the ODI World Cup is barely a couple of years away.
There is still a span of two years left until the next ODI World Cup, and taking over in the lead role would allow Shubman Gill to settle into the role and build a team to challenge for the title in the marquee event.
Earlier, India head coach Gautam Gambhir had supported split captaincy saying that it will lessen the mental pressure. Thus, it would balance the performances for the captain/captains.
The BCCI selection committee met on Saturday morning virtually, and Shubman Gill was in attendance as well. It is believed that BCCI has talked to Rohit and intimated that they are looking for a young captain usually ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup.
