Shubman Gill will be the captain of the Indian test team after Rohit Sharma and he might bat at number 4 in the batting order for the 5 match test series against England starting this Friday at Headingley in Leeds. This will be India’s first test since Rohit and Virat announced their retirements and there’s a big gap in experience in the batting order. KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal will open but the number 4 spot is where things get interesting.
There has been a lot of talk that Gill will bat at number 4. At 25 he has been batting at number 3 for a couple of years now but he started his career as an opener. The Indian captain didn’t give a clear answer about his position saying he’ll decide after the India A vs India warm up match. Gill said he’ll try out different positions in the practice game.

“If it’s a practice match I’ll maybe test the waters and see which spot works best for everyone,” he told Dinesh Karthik on SKY SPORTS.
If Gill bats at number 4 then either Sai Sudharsan or Karun Nair will bat at number 3. Sai is looking to make his test debut while Karun hasn’t played for India since March 2017.
