Smriti Mandhana has never been shy about speaking her mind, and her latest comments on the future of Indian women’s cricket carry the weight of someone who has lived through the sport’s transformation. The senior India batter believes that the next big leap for the women’s game will not come from a single tournament win but from embedding a genuine culture of professionalism at every level, from grassroots academies to the national team dressing room.
Mandhana’s vision centres on consistency — in fitness standards, in domestic cricket scheduling, and in how young players are mentally prepared for the demands of international cricket. She has often pointed out that the explosion of interest following the Women’s Premier League gave the sport visibility, but sustaining that momentum requires structures that outlast the headlines. CricketBuzz understands that conversations within the team management have increasingly focused on building individualised fitness and performance plans, rather than a one-size-fits-all approach that was common in earlier years.
Building Depth Beyond the Spotlight
For Mandhana, professionalism isn’t just about gym sessions and recovery protocols; it’s about mindset. She has spoken about wanting young domestic cricketers to treat the sport as a serious career option rather than a passion pursued on the side, a shift that requires better pay structures, more matches, and stronger state-level coaching. As CricketBuzz reported earlier this year, several state associations have already begun increasing contact hours between support staff and emerging players, a trend Mandhana sees as crucial.
She also emphasises accountability among senior players, suggesting that leadership isn’t confined to the captain alone but should be shared across the squad so that standards don’t dip when key players are rested or injured. With India eyeing sustained success across formats, Mandhana’s push for professionalism could well define how the next generation approaches the game. Stay with CricketBuzz for more updates as Indian women’s cricket continues its evolution both on and off the field.
