Sri Lanka’s chances at the Asia Cup 2025 just got a whole lot better. Wanindu Hasaranga is back in action. He’s been declared fit and is heading to the UAE as part of the 16 member squad.
Hasaranga’s return is a big boost for Sri Lanka. He’s been one of their best white ball players lately but a hamstring injury during the ODI series against Bangladesh in July put him out of action. That injury kept him out of the T20I series against Bangladesh and the tour of Zimbabwe. During that time the selectors had to try out different players to fill his spot. Young players like Vishen Halambage and Dushan Hemantha got a chance to prove themselves but the team always wanted Hasaranga back in time for the Asia Cup and the T20 World Cup.
The Asia Cup squad is different from the one that played against Bangladesh earlier this year. Senior players like Dinesh Chandimal, Avishka Fernando, Jeffrey Vandersay and Eshan Malinga didn’t make the cut. Instead Nuwanidu Fernando, Kamindu Mendis, Kamil Mishara and Chamika Karunaratne have been included. These additions will add more depth to both the batting and the seam bowling attack.
