Virat Kohli, one of India’s top cricket stars, was rumored to be joining the Sydney Sixers, and this news went viral on social media early Tuesday. The buzz got a lot of people excited, but soon it became clear that it was all just an April Fools’ joke. The official account of the Big Bash League team later had to clarify that it wasn’t true.
The Sixers are known for their strong performances in the league, having clinched the title three times, with their most recent win coming right after the COVID-19 break back in 2021. Their cheeky post claimed, “King Kohli 🤩 Virat Kohli is officially a Sixer for the next TWO seasons,” which definitely turned heads and sparked some wild reactions. You can still check out the playful announcement on their social media.

It’s important to note that Indian male players like Kohli aren’t allowed to play in foreign leagues due to the policies of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). This is not the case for female players, who can participate in international leagues, opening up more opportunities for them. The BCCI keeps a tight grip on Indian players participating in overseas competitions to maintain the importance of the Indian Premier League (IPL) and to manage player fitness and schedule. They believe allowing participation in foreign leagues could weaken the IPL’s brand and popularity.
The situation is different for women’s cricket since there isn’t an equally strong domestic T20 league comparable to the IPL. Allowing them to compete internationally helps grow the sport and create visibility. With the rise of the Women’s Premier League, it will be interesting to see if this affects the BCCI’s stance on women players in the future.
As for Kohli, fans can catch him back on the field soon when his team, the Royal Challengers Bangalore, faces off against the Gujarat Titans on Wednesday at their home ground. It should be an exciting match for fans!
