Ryan Rickelton is focused on the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. The left-handed batter wants to make use of the upcoming T20I series against Australia. He sees it as an opportunity to cement his spot at the top of the Proteas batting order.
The 29-year-old first played internationally in 2023. He’s been making progress in all formats for South Africa. Now he wants to be a consistent T20I player. The Proteas have 11 T20Is this year and Rickelton thinks this is the time for him to show what he can do.
South Africa want a new opening pair as Quinton de Kock, Reeza Hendricks and Temba Bavuma are not available. With the T20 World Cup next year, it’s getting intense as players fight for spots. Rickelton and Lhuan-dre Pretorius were picked for the series in Australia. Aiden Markram can also open. Even with the tough competition, Rickelton says he won’t change how he plays.
I’m still trying to get comfortable in the T20 team, but I don’t think anyone expects me to change what I’ve been doing for the last two years, Rickelton said, according to ESPNcricinfo. I hope to grab that opening spot for South Africa, as we head towards the World Cup and beyond.
South Africa play three T20Is against Australia starting August 10. Aiden Markram is back, which will strengthen the top order. Rassie van der Dussen will also play in the middle. Rickelton thinks their presence will let him play freely.
Rickelton had a good IPL 2025 season with the Mumbai Indians. He played 14 matches and scored 388 runs at 29.85 and a strike rate of 150.97. He had three half-centuries. In 13 T20I innings, he’s scored 263 runs at 20.23 with one fifty.

South Africa haven’t won a bilateral T20I series against Australia since 2016. Rickelton sees the upcoming matches – starting July 10 in Darwin – as both a rare opportunity and a step towards their 2026 goals. We discussed it as a team. We don’t win series in Australia often, he said. We want to get our spots and play for South Africa.
As players fight for top-order spots and the T20 World Cup gets near, Rickelton’s next few months will be crucial for him and South Africa’s white-ball ambitions. He needs to be at his best to cement his spot and help his team.
