Before he made his decision to retire from Test cricket public, Virat Kohli reportedly chatted with former all-rounder and head coach Ravi Shastri. Kohli and Shastri had a solid partnership as captain and coach from 2014 to 2021.
Together, they accomplished a lot, including winning a Test series in Australia and an ODI series in South Africa. During their time, the team stayed at the top of the Test rankings for three years and made it to the semifinals of the 2019 ODI World Cup. They also reached the final of the first-ever ICC World Test Championship, but lost to New Zealand in a rain-affected match.

According to Cricbuzz, aside from Shastri, Kohli also talked with Ajit Agarkar, who heads the Indian selection committee, and was set to speak with BCCI vice-president Jay Shah after he informed the board of his Test cricket retirement. Once Kohli shared the news on social media, Shastri praised him as a modern great.
Kohli’s retirement has sparked responses from various figures worldwide, including tennis star Novak Djokovic, footballer Harry Kane, and UFC’s Conor McGregor. At 36, Kohli retired from T20Is last year but is still available for ODIs. In recent months, three senior Indian cricketers, including Rohit Sharma and Ravichandran Ashwin, have also announced their retirements.
