The day after creating history by winning their first-ever IPL title, Kohli took to social media to send a playful message to teammate Salt. Well done partner. Now, get back to the real stuff while I finish changing some diapers, Kohli wrote on Instagram. The message arrived shortly after RCB had edged out Punjab Kings by six runs, breaking an 18-year drought. Salt’s wife had just delivered two days before the final, and while Salt managed only 16 runs in the game, Kohli was busy celebrating RCB’s triumph.
Finally, there was the culmination of the little mishap when, with the final victory being sealed, Kohli went down on his knees in tears, overwhelmed with emotions. Much the same tears expert RCB fans shared, having harboured the germ of hope since the last heartbreaks, tallying up 190 runs; Kohli had 43 runs off 35 balls. PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer, chose to bat first, wanting to chase down the total, but never went near to winning.
With this win, RCB are eight times IPL champions after the likes of Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians. Prior to this win, RCB had finished as runners-up in 2009, 2011, and 2016.
Disaster struck in the celebrations below, at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, where a stampede left 11 dead and more than 30 injured as fans gathered to celebrate with their team after the historic victory.
