Chennai Super Kings took down Mumbai Indians by four wickets on Sunday (March 23), kicking off their IPL 2025 season on a good note. The game, held at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, saw CSK chase down a target of 156 runs in 19.1 overs, losing six wickets in the process. New Zealand’s Rachin Ravindra, who stepped in for Devon Conway, scored the most runs with an unbeaten 65 off 45 balls, while captain Ruturaj Gaikwad added 53 from 26 balls.
Mumbai Indians put up a fight even though their total was lower than expected. In this season’s first big matchup at CSK’s home ground, former CSK player Deepak Chahar stood out for MI. Making his IPL debut for the team, he scored 28 runs from just 15 balls and also took one wicket for 18 runs in two overs. Chahar was definitely a bright spot for the Mumbai side.
After the match, Chahar, who is good friends with MS Dhoni, joked around with his former captain. During the post-match handshake, Dhoni playfully hit him with his bat, and fans quickly shared the clip online, making it go viral.
Dhoni batted at No. 8 for CSK but didn’t score, facing two balls. Even so, he made his mark in the game as the most experienced player in IPL history. On Sunday, he became just the third player to compete in all 18 seasons of the league. CSK retained him for Rs 4 crore ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auctions last year. Despite not scoring, Dhoni impressed with his keeping skills, stumping MI captain Suryakumar Yadav during the match.
