After India won the 2011 World Cup, things went downhill for the team for the next two years. They were whitewashed 0-4 in away Test series against England and Australia. Many big names were dropped from the team.
The selectors even decided to replace MS Dhoni as captain and Mohinder Amarnath had a big role to play in this decision. Yograj Singh, Yuvraj’s dad, didn’t mince words when he criticized Amarnath and the selectors. He said they messed up by getting rid of players like Gambhir, Yuvraj, Harbhajan, Zaheer, Kaif, Laxman and Dravid after the 2011 win which he feels set the team back.

According to Yograj, after those big losses, players like Gambhir, Yuvraj, Zaheer and Harbhajan started to fade away from the national team while Dravid and Laxman ended their Test careers. By the time the 2015 World Cup came around, Gambhir, Yuvraj, Zaheer and Harbhajan were out of the ODI picture.
Yograj blamed Amarnath for handling those players badly during a tough time. He said the team lost five series under Dhoni’s captaincy and there were talks of replacing him with Amarnath but that’s not the way to go about it. Amarnath said Dhoni was supposed to be replaced after those defeats but the then BCCI President N. Srinivasan stopped it.

Amarnath said if the selection committee really believed in its choices for Indian cricket, they should have the freedom to take decisions. His tenure on the selection committee was short lived, just about a year. In the end Dhoni continued to captain the Test team till he retired in late 2014 and the limited overs till January 2017 when Virat Kohli took over.
