Considering the tragedy of eleven persons having died in a stampede, Kohli was really eager to win his first IPL trophy. It was after Royal Challengers Bangalore, Kohli’s team for over eighteen years, won the IPL title, that the team returned to Bengaluru for celebrations. The celebrations began with the Karnataka Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah, greeting them at Vidhana Soudha, followed by more celebrations at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium.
However, outside, a big crowd had gathered trying to get a glimpse of the players which eventually led to chaos and stampede causing the deaths and injuries of sixty-seven persons. Inside the stadium, the celebrations were going on with Kohli and RCB captain Rajat Patidar speaking to the crowd, but outside the stadium things were far from good.
Bengaluru Police have arrested four officials from RCB and the events management company DNA Entertainment in relation to the incident. FIRs have been lodged against RCB, DNA, and the Karnataka State Cricket Association, and investigations are underway.
The hashtag #ArrestKohli is trending on social media with many castigating Kohli after the stampede. Some think Kohli and his teammates should bear some responsibility, while others question why he rushed out to London instead of sitting with the families of the victims.
While serious charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder and other offenses relating to the stampede feature in the FIR.
