Wiaan Mulder has now got the record for the highest individual score by a South African in a Test match. He surpassed Hashim Amla’s 311 against England in 2012 during the second Test against Zimbabwe on Monday.
He got to the record with a boundary off Blessing Muzarabani. He is only the second South African to score a triple century in Test cricket. He almost broke Virender Sehwag’s record for the fastest triple century, getting to 300 in 297 balls compared to Sehwag’s 278.
At the time of writing he is on 350, only the seventh player in history to get to that mark. He is also the first to do so since 2006.
Fans are going wild on social media.
One said: “Wiaan Mulder heading towards 350. This is an amazing performance from the new captain of South Africa.”
Another said: “Wiaan Mulder is still on 346 — looks like Brian Lara’s record might be at risk today.
Another user said, “We’re going to see Brian Lara’s record broken today. Wiaan Mulder.
Here’s another: “Yes, it’s against a weaker side like Zimbabwe, but if Wiaan Mulder gets to 400, it’s still great. It doesn’t matter who the opponent is; batting this long takes skill and focus. Lara’s 400* might have company. #WiaanMulder #SAvZIM.
Mulder came in at number 3 for the first time in a Test match in the World Test Championship final against Australia at Lord’s. He didn’t do well in that game and though South Africa won the title, questions about his place remained.

He has done much better against Zimbabwe. He scored 17 and 147 in the two innings and also took 4/50 with the ball. A record breaking match here might be just what his career needs at this point.
